About Us
Hi! My name is Azmia Magane. I’m a poet and writer, with bylines in Elle, Latina, Glamour, Allure, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, New York Times’ Women in the World, Huffington Post, The Independent, and more. I have a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Central Florida, and a really bad habit of quoting rappers. I like cats, tacos, long walks on the beach, and even longer naps.
I like to write about social justice and human rights issues, mental health, feminism, intersectionality, foreign policy, and issues that affect the Muslim community.
(Yes, I’m one of those scary Moose-lambs. No, I’m not a terrorist, nor am I oppressed. The thing on my head is called a hijab and no, my husband doesn’t make me wear it.)
My work has been shared by the World Food Program USA and Amnesty International, used as required reading in college courses, and cited by The New York Times.
Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to interview (and learn from!) many interesting people, such as multiplatinum singer Joe, music mogul Russell Simmons, NFL star and Super Bowl winner Mario Manningham, Grammy winner Christina Milian, The Nanny’s Fran Drescher, Disney darling Monique Coleman, Diddy’s supergroup Day 26, and others.
I’ve been quoted or featured in outlets like Vogue, Bustle, Mic, Middle East Eye, US News, Upworthy, and USA Today. I’m honored to have been selected as one of the participants in the “Progressive Women’s Voices” program, class of 2017, at the Women’s Media Center. I look forward to continuing to speak out about issues that matter.
In 2016/7, I served as the chief of staff at MuslimGirl.com, the leading website for Muslim women in the West, for over a year. Prior to that, I was a senior editor at The Source for two years, where Disiz from Def Jam France and I once threw this really cool concert in Paris, educating French youth about the legacy of civil rights icon Malcolm X, aptly-named “Who Is Malcolm X?”
In March 2017, I initiated and drafted the history-making proclamations in which the city of Orlando and state of Florida officially recognized and declared March 27, 2017 as the inaugural “Muslim Women’s Day” as part of the viral #MuslimWomensDay initiative, a viral hashtag campaign with over 72 million impressions that was led by Muslim Girl.
I’ve never dropped a mixtape, but once upon a time, I created the Orly x Muslim Girl #HalalPaint nail polish collaboration, an initiative to foster beauty inclusivity for Muslim women. The collaboration is the first its kind in which a mainstream American beauty brand catered to Muslim women. It made headlines in Vogue, Glamour, Allure, Beauty Con, Pop Sugar, Refinery 29, Nylon, Elle UK, NailPro, and many other mainstream outlets.
As of October 2018, I am proud to announce that I was selected to represent the Lupus Foundation of America’s Florida chapter as an ambassador in a pilot ambassadorship program.
